Matthew Nash 1976-2010

Our much loved and respected friend Matthew Nash passed away in January 2010 at the age of 33 leaving a grieving wife, son and family and hundreds of stunned friends across the world.

All who witnessed the outpouring of grief at the news were left in no doubt about what kind of man he was. In the days that followed the same words came up time and again: kind, friendly, caring, passionate, bright, funny. His warmth and humanity shone through in the hundreds of tributes paid to him. Many told the same tale, of how at a low point he had reached out to them with kind words or wise practical advice. He was a great conversationalist and would speak with passion and knowledge about the many subjects he loved; literature, cinema, music, travel, politics and of course his beloved West Ham.

He was also a talented writer and the leading light of the Peoples Writing Contest. Always enthusiastic, always encouraging, always generous with his time and advice to new writers. His love of writing and commitment to the contest is what spurs us to go on without him, and why in his honour it is being reborn as the Renegade Dogs Writing Contest. This isn't a goodbye Matthew, it's our tribute to you.
